Working in a spiral-bound sketchbook is a fantastic way to explore mixed media techniques across two pages, creating a cohesive spread. In this project, I worked on an 8×8-inch sketchbook, creating a layered mixed media artwork using collage, translucent layers, and dry-brushed acrylics.
If you love working with vintage papers, magazine scraps, and textured elements, this tutorial will guide you step by step.
If you enjoy experimenting with mixed media techniques like me, I have a collection of creative projects for you! From abstract mark making to textured collages and art journaling, explore a variety of tutorials that will spark your creativity.
Step 1: Collaging Neutral-Themed Papers
Start by selecting neutral-colored papers for the base layer. I used:
- Patterned papers from magazines
- Vintage book pages
- Script and music sheets
Before gluing them down, lay out all the pieces across both pages, experimenting with different compositions. This helps in balancing colors and textures. I like to take a quick photo before adhering them—it gives me a reference in case any pieces shift. However, during the gluing process, some elements naturally move, and that’s perfectly fine!
Once satisfied with the arrangement, start gluing everything down securely and let it dry.

Step 2: Add a Second Layer of Collage for Color
Now, introduce color elements into the spread. The second layer of collage will define the dominant color palette of the artwork. In this case, I added:
- Soft pinks, peach, and pinkish-orange magazine scraps
- A touch of green from some background collage papers
- White space intentionally left to create breathing room in the composition
This step is about building depth and visual interest while setting the mood for the painting.

Step 3: Blending with Translucent Textured Papers
To soften and blend the collaged elements, I added translucent materials over parts of the spread. These include:
- Doilies
- Gauze fabric
- Wire mesh tape
- Tissue paper
These materials add subtle texture while slightly veiling the collage underneath, creating a layered effect without completely covering the details.

Step 4: Acrylic Layer with Dry Brushing
For the next layer, I applied a soft acrylic wash to unify the composition. Since my collage already had hints of green, I used:
- A mix of green, orange, and peach
- A touch of white for highlights
- Dry brushing to enhance texture
By lightly brushing over the textured areas, the raised surfaces catch the paint, revealing beautiful highlights and depth. This step helps everything come together while still allowing the underlying collage to peek through.

Step 5: Journaling and Watercolor Details
With the background ready, I added personal journaling using a black pen and a white applicator tip (since I didn’t have a white pen). The journaling reflected my thoughts on growth, transformation, and stepping into the unknown.
Next, I deepened the edges of the page with watercolor washes and added paint splatters for an organic, free-flowing effect.

Step 6: Add the Focal Points – Butterflies
For the focal points, I chose butterflies to represent transformation.
- On the left page, I arranged three butterflies in a vertical line, from small to large—symbolizing growth and learning to fly.
- On the right page, the butterflies moved in different directions, representing the courage to explore the unknown.
To enhance the feeling of movement and magic, I finished the page with delicate white paint splatters, adding a sense of lightness and energy.

Final Thoughts
This mixed media spread was an intuitive process, layering collage, texture, journaling, and meaningful symbols. If you’re exploring art journaling, try using butterflies, birds, or other symbols that resonate with your personal journey.
